LOUD WOMEN: Reclaim These Streets (2021)

Single to raise funds for Women’s Aid as well as boldly and loudly shouting out against male violence against women.

LOUD WOMEN have been around for a while now. It is a network for all those who support putting women on stage and turning up the volume. It’s a not-for-profit initiative run by Cassie Fox of I, Doris, with help from some brilliant friends.

This latest project was inspired by anger and frustration of recent events, including the murder of Sarah Edwards by a serving police officer earlier this year, then the aggressive policing of the vigil held in her memory.

The single, Reclaim These Streets, features sixty four female musicians from around the country, It’s been described as ‘a feminist Band Aid’ – but it’s not. The simple fact that Cassie Fox, Gail Something Else and the Petrol Girls are involved, and Bono isn’t, means it is loads better than Band Aid. It’s raunchy and a proper rock and roll song.

As the band state on their website

Hopefully the day will eventually come when it will not be necessary to write and record songs like this – and I mean that in the most optimistic way, of course. Until that day arrives, those who fight against domestic abuse in all its forms can be proud to have ‘Reclaim These Streets’ as their anthem, and their call-to-arms.  Although it’s one Loud Woman’s initiative, it would be a Record Of The Week (and of the Year) whoever instigated it.

Check out the Loud Women Website for more details, and don’t forget Women’s Aid

LYRICS

From the age of 13

I’ve known the fear of dark streets

I’ve known my body’s danger

Can he hear my heart beat?

Every woman’s got a story

Breaks silence with a whisper

Daring to tell her truth

Calling to her sisters Text me you when get home

Keys between your fingers

Staying close to streetlights

Fear of shadows lingers

Till every woman’s safe from harm in her own home

Till every woman’s safe to live her truth

Till every woman’s safe to walk on every street

Ooo-aah

Reclaim these streets! (Reclaim these streets)

Reclaim these streets! (Reclaim these streets)

Reclaim these streets! (Reclaim these streets)

Ooo-aah

From the age of 13

Been told that it is my fault

Blamed for male violence

Better watch where I walk

We have a right to safety

She was just walking home

Too many women share a story You are not alone

Text me you when get home

Keys between your fingers

Staying close to streetlights

Fear of shadows lingers

Till every woman’s safe from harm in her own home

Till every woman’s safe to live her truth

Till every woman’s safe to walk on every street

Ooo-aah

Reclaim these streets! (Reclaim these streets)

Reclaim these streets! (Reclaim these streets)

Reclaim these streets! (Reclaim these streets)

Ooo-aah

Born out of fear

Marinated in rage

It only takes desire

To implement a change

Shine a universal light

To illuminate the dark

Where one brave woman took a walk across the park

Together we come to make a stand

With empathy, love and courage in hand

The power of the people

When all of us are equal

It’s our God-given right that we should feel safe

Ooo-aah

Reclaim these streets! (Reclaim these streets)

Reclaim these streets! (Reclaim these streets)

Reclaim these streets! (Reclaim these streets)

Ooo-aah

Text me when you get home…
