LISTEN AGAIN: Peppermint Iguana Radio # 165 – Lisa Dreads at the controls – 06/02/18

Lisa bribes her way into Clint’s heart tog et on the radio

For this week’s radio show we looked back on the days when we used to put on gigs on a regular basis.

The peppermint Princess, Lisa Dreads, joined us in the studio for the night. She was shy, she was losing her voice, but she still managed to be louder than our microphones could handle.

Back in the day we just put gigs on. It was what we did. But going back through the list we can safely say we put some pretty tidy bands on, even if we say so ourselves.

And we are getting back into it – kicking off with a gig Le Pub – with the awesome Tarantism Folk Disco headlining

The play list includes easily available tracks, some off self released demos CDs and a few gems dragged kicking and screaming off long lost demo cassettes.

LISTEN LIVE: Peppermint Iguana Radio # 164 with Mel and Magnus of Tarantism in the studio

Mel and Magnus doing their folk disco thang at the Green Gathering 2016

You may have heard the Peppermint Iguana crew are getting back into promoting after a break of 14 years. First up, we are teaming up with the Green Gathering Campaigns Crew to put on a gig in Le Pub on the 10th February with a shed load of really cool artists, including the amazing Tarantism Folk Disco to finish the night off.

‘What be a folk disco?’ I hear you all you cry. Well, rest assured, it’s not a bloke in an Aron jumper playing Stealer’s Wheel records. It is Mel and Magnus from that Tarantism playing disco music in a folk style.

‘Who are Mel and Magnus?’ I hear less of you cry. For those of you not cool enough to know, Mel and Magnus are the Posh and Becks of the celtic-ska-punk-funk-dance scene and have been at the core of legendary festival band Tarantism for over twenty years now. In addition they gig as a duo, Magnus wears capes on stage with Hawkwind and as well as doing cheesy discos, Mel makes the finest vegan cheese this side of Vegania.

Still want to know more? Fear not, in the run up to our gig, Mel and Magnus are dropping into the Dapper FM studio to take over the Peppermint Iguana Radio show.

You can expect some of their own tunes, some unreleased tunes by other bands recorded in their Rockaway Studios – and no doubt many more treats for your heads hearts and feets.

To listen live go to www.dapperfm.co.uk from 8pm o’clock on Tuesday 30th January.

LISTEN AGAIN: Peppermint Iguana Radio # 163 – Trump Free Shithouse

Our 16th January show went down a storm, we had hippies in Cwmcarn dancing whilst pickling Beetroot, gig photographers in Surrey sat in their van and anarchists from Newport sat in their mother’s front room.

We also paid tribute to fallen stars, hot pre-releases and a preview of our gig in Le Pub on 10th February. Mel and Magnus of that Tarantism Folk Disco, who be playing that gig, will be dropping in to take over our next show on 30th January.

Sunday lunch DIY underground style – with The Mob

To help Dapper FM celebrate ten years on air, on 5th December we embarked on a three hour radio odyssey showcasing as many of our mates as we could.

No golden oldies or hidden gems just mates from the DIY underground. It was impossible to fit all of our mates on, so apologies for those that missed out. However, a few of those missing from the list can be found on our round up of 2017 show and there will be more on our festive knees up on 19th December.

Putting the play list together was quite humbling. We feel privileged to count so many damn fine creative musicians in our extended Iguana family. Our hats off to you all.

LISTEN AGAIN: Peppermint Iguana Radio # 159: Unexpected show in the Dapper FM area

This ‘Selected highlights of 2017’ show is a bit unique, having been broadcast not once, but twice!

“How can that be?” we hear you cry. Well, it was first broadcast on Tuesday 28th November, but after the show finished we managed to break the station and loose the recording. Normally we would just shrug our shoulders and move on. But this was a reflection on some of the year’s best choonage with a rather splendid play list. So we decided to do the show again with the same play list.

Find out if it was worth the effort by checking out the cloudcast below. Continue reading LISTEN AGAIN: Peppermint Iguana Radio # 159: Unexpected show in the Dapper FM area

LISTEN AGAIN: Peppermint Iguana Radio # 158 – Mind your head with CAPTAIN PARANOID

Just because you are paranoid it does not mean they are not out to get you

On 21st November the legend that is Captain Paranoid joined Peppermint Iguana in the studio for a very special radio show.

Pick a few songs we said. The next thing we knew we had a massive thirty eight track play list and he could not make up his mind which ones to loose. He was even arguing with musicians he has collaborated with over which version of his own songs to play.

We were well over an hour into the show before we finally worked out what the play list was going to look like. But hey, this is what happens when working with people who are all consumed by music and are filled with passion and emotion. It was memorable. To say the least.

To listen to the show again click on the cloudcast below – and below that is what we think the play list was – even now it is hard to keep up with what went on!

LISTEN AGAIN: Peppermint Iguana Radio # 157 – 100th Anniversary of the October Revolution

On 7th November 2017, we went out live and direct, broadcasting to the free world, with a show that marked one hundred years to the day, since the October Revolution in Russia.

On 7th November 1917 the Red Guard occupied government buildings in Petrograd, in preparation of the storming of the winter palace, which took place on 8th November.

The start of ten days that shook the world, ten days that had an impact on every man woman and child on the planet, ten days that are still reverberating around the world today.

There are far better places to go for a history lesson of those one hundred years, but we had a go at reflecting on the last century using rock and roll as our media of choice.

From October 1917 itself, through plots and coups, through wars, cold and hot, through the expansion of an ideology to the collapse of an empire.

LISTEN LIVE: Peppermint Iguana Radio # 157 – 100 years of spinning revolutions

The October Revolution in Russia Kicked off 100 years ago this week – on 7th November 1917. As our next show goes out live on 7th November 2017, it would be rude to not run with a play list heavily laced with tunes that have a connection with Russia, revolutions and counter revolutions

Whilst all those with a left wing slant will look to the October Revolution for inspiration, there is no denying that in the century since, some pretty bad shit has gone down as well. So, whilst we are still secretly plotting our play list expect cold wars, doping and riotous pussys to feature alongside tunes from revolutions around the world inspired by the big one. LISTEN AGAIN: Peppermint Iguaua Radio Show # 155 – The Shape of things to come 10/10/17

On the 10th October we hit the hit the airwaves once more for a show full to overflowing with hot new releases, and demos.

Throughout the summer we have been concentrating on the UK festival scene, showcasing the bands playing the best of the underground gigs. But the season is finally over. Tents are now being stuffed into attics for the winter, lightweight caravans are being put in storage and hardcore trucks are heading for the sun.

So for this show we caught up with some of the demos and freebies we have had sent to us through the summer, but not got around to playing. Despite cocking up the advertising for the show, twice, forgetting to take our glasses into the studio and leaving the iguana phone back at HQ, it was a blast.

Expect Tribazic, Tribe of Cro, P.A.I.N., Radical Dance Faction, The Sporadics and Dub the Earth to turn up at some point during the show.

Yes, that’s right, the Sporadics. They will be hitting the road again shortly with not one but TWO new guitarists. We can’t F@ckin’ wait.

We are going to have to hold a few of our favourites back though, cos Something Else in the Dean will be bringing the season to close at the end of September – we are already planning our end of season show in anticipation.

Festivals aint the only things happening though – so you can expect a preview of hot gigs coming up with Back to the Planet, Senser and Ruts DC, alongside new releases from Steven Wilson, Blue Forest and Jinx in dub.

All this festival loveliness can be listened to live by going to www.dapperfm.co.uk from 8pm on Tuesday 29 August.

As usual, the show is sponsored by www.unisoncwmtaflocalgov.wales the union for public sector groovers.

The Peppermint Iguana Radio Show will be coming at ya live and direct on Dapper FM again on Tuesday 1st August and, once again, the focus will be forthcoming festivals.

This summer has already witnessed a plethora of festivals but, as always, things go up a gear in August.  There is no excuse for not being able to find a festival to go to next month. Boom Town, Beautiful Days, Shambala, Green Gathering, Green Man, Truefest and of course, ye olde McReading, to name but a few.

Into the mix this year comes Landed, a festival previously held in April, but this year moving to a sunnier (hopefully) place in the calendar.

For this show we will take a peek at some of the festivals coming up in August, but will be focusing mainly on Landed. Why? Well, because it is set in the heart of Mid Wales, which is where we like festivals; it is non commercial and grass roots, which is how we like our festivals to be run and – last but not least – cos they have been generous enough to give us tickets for the festival to give away as a prize.

So tune in on 1st August, hear some of the bands playing landed, find out what landed is all about and, if ya be lucky, win yourself a pair of tickets to the event.

To tune in, go to www.dapperfm.co.uk from 8pm till 10pm on 1st August 2017.

For a chance to win tickets, go to http://peppermintiguana.co.uk/winticketstolanded2017/

The boy Fowler has been nagging to come back and do another radio show, so we have let him come back on the 18th July to shut him up.

“Get me back before Green Gathering” he said, “so I can play loads of Green Gathering bands and talk about the Radical Wales Campaign Area” he said.

So here we are, he is doing a show before the Green Gathering and how many GG bands is he playing? None. Not one. He is just playing his favourite recent tunes. We are sure he will do loads of talking about the festival though.

Don’t panic, Clint to the rescue, he will be playing some GG related choonage. He will also be playing a few teaser tracks by bands playing the forthcoming Landed Festival and will be announcing a special mega give away competition related to the aforementioned Landed.

Clint will also be throwing in some tunes that are not related to any festivals – they are just new.

Next live show, Tuesday 4th July, a day when we traditionally celebrate Independents – bands that do it themselves without the assistance of ‘the music industry’.

OK – some of us actually do that every day, but hey, we got to call the show something.

Between now and then we will be in a field drinking dodgy cider and listening to loud music, doing research for you. Who know what we will discover that will make it to the final play list.

LISTEN AGAIN: Peppermint Iguana Radio # 147 – Solstice/Surplus Festival Special

Two Speed Steve, The Boy Fry and Torrie - SURPLUS PEOPLE!
Two Speed Steve, The Boy Fry and Torrie – SURPLUS PEOPLE!

Peppermint Iguana don’t do festivals, if they did they would look a bit like Surplus Fest.

In the last four years they have held six festivals at three different locations. This year they return to the same site as last year, having struck a good relationship with the landowner after the 2016 event.

Surplus is an old skool event, organised by underground festival heads, for underground festival heads. They are all volunteers and the priority is having a good time whilst providing a space for the tribe to gather, rather than making a fast buck.

With bands and DJs spread over five stages, the line us is a veritable who’s who of the festival underground, including Radical Dance faction, Hawklords, the Omega Tribe, AOS3, Tribazik, Kilnaboy, Clusterfuck, The Sporadics, Dub the Earth, The Autonomads and Lacertillia.

Whilst there will be enough crusty-ska-punk-dub-stoner-rock-legends to keep the keenest of brew crew happy – and their dog – there will also be plenty of new music to discover, such as welsh outfits Captain Accident and the Disasters, the Chalk Outlines and the Biggest Things Since Powdered Milk, alongside Chubby Thunderous Bad Kush Masters from that London and Cornwall’s Cybernetic Witch Cult.

In short, this is set to be one of the best festivals of the summer.

On 20th June 2017, the eve of the summer solstice, three of the disorganisers of the festival, the Boy Fry (singer with Lacertilla and all round mover and shaker on the UK stoner rock scene), Steve Speed (techno head and trouble maker) and Torrie (old git, veteran scrap merchant from 2,000 Dirty Squatters and general rouge) joined us in the studio for a special radio show.

The result of that two hours of mayhem can be heard again by clicking on the cloudcast thingy below.

LISTEN LIVE: Peppermint Iguana Radio # 147 – Surplus Festival/Solstice special

suplus air guitarOur next show goes out on the eve of the summer solstice and will preview the forthcoming Surplus Festival, which takes place in South Wales, 30th June to 2nd July.

Festival organisers Torrie, Fry and Speed will join us in the studio talk about all things Surplus and spin some of the bands and DJs that will be performing over the weekend.

The festival is basically a who is who of the current festival underground and has more of our favourite bands than you can shake a stick at. It is going to be hard work working out who we can leave off the play list.

Expect The Defekters, Black Star Dub Collective, 2,000 Dirty Squatters, Lacertilla, Clusterfuck, AOS3, P.A.I.N. Radical Dance Faction and much much more (so long as the Torrie and gang stop talking long enough for us to play some music)

As usual, our most recent show featured bands we have recently caught live, bands we are going to see in the next two weeks and some stuff relevant to current affairs.

But sadly, we had to kick off with a tribute to long time friend of the iguana Tribe, Anne Nicholson, who slipped away to the great after party in the sky on Monday 5th June. Anne was an inspiration and wise head to the many of us who knew her and will be sadly missed.
